Location
The Altenberg here refers to the Neuweierer Altenberg. It lies south of the village of Neuweier within the city limits of Baden-Baden in Baden.
Landscape and Soils
The documented vineyard areas are located in south-west-facing sites that are less steep than the nearby Mauerberg. Deeper soils with loess clay layers provide greater water availability there than in the described, barren steep slopes.
Cultivation and Grape Varieties
In the documented holdings of the Dütsch winery, work is carried out predominantly by hand up to the harvest. Between the vine rows, cover crops grow; soil care is carried out gently, and fertilisation is exclusively organic. In the Neuweierer Altenberg, red grape varieties and Silvaner have been planted. Riesling is also documented in the wine “Neuweierer Altenberg Riesling”, and Spätburgunder as “Altenberg Spätburgunder”.
Wines and History
The Neuweierer Altenberg Riesling is designated as a Qualitätswein dry from the Baden/Ortenau growing area. The wine is described as full-bodied, harmonious and structured, with aromas of ripe fruit and melon. Cellar work includes gentle pressing, temperature-controlled fermentation, longer maturation on the lees and delayed bottling. The name Altenberg is linked to Neuweier as a local wine-growing site name and has already been mentioned in a historical publication from 1959 in connection with land ownership there.
