Location and classification
The Alte Römerstraße is a single-vineyard site in Rheinhessen, spanning the communities Frei-Laubersheim and Volxheim. It is assigned to the Bingen area and the Rheingrafenstein region, and in the official wine-growing sites register it is listed under number 710537 for both cadastral entries.
Area and exposure
For the Alte Römerstraße, the wine-growing sites register specifies 15.2 hectares of planted vineyard area in Frei-Laubersheim and 73.0 hectares in Volxheim. The Volxheim section is described as a south-exposed site.
Soil
The terroir profile names marl/pelosol from calcareous, clayey deposits of the Tertiary sea. The soil is deep, calcareous and rich in clay, contains spring-capable clay, has limited water and air permeability, and features a high nutrient content and strong calcareousness.
Grape varieties and designation
In the Volxheim parcels of a winery, White Burgundy (Weißburgunder), Cabernet Sauvignon, Gewürztraminer, Rivaner and St. Laurent are planted. A price list from 2024 also includes a dry Pinot Noir Weißherbst under the designation Volxheimer Alte Römerstraße. The name of the site refers to the adjacent route, which is referred to as the Alte Römerstraße.
