Location and Municipality
Frei-Laubersheim is a municipality in the Bad Kreuznach district in Rhineland-Palatinate and lies in the wine-growing region Rheinhessen. The municipality is situated at about 180 metres above NHN and covers 9.88 square kilometres.
History and Winegrowing
Frei-Laubersheim was first mentioned in donation documents from the years 767/768 and 771. The documents already record vineyards in the municipal area. This means the village has a documented winegrowing tradition of more than 1,200 years.
Vineyard Sites
The named Frei-Laubersheim vineyard sites are assigned to the Bingen area and to the Großlage (major site) Rheingrafenstein. These include Alte Römerstraße, Fels, Kirchberg, Reichskeller and Rheingrafenberg.
Soils and Wine Styles
The vineyard sites show varying geological conditions: In Alte Römerstraße and in Kirchberg, deep-rooted, calcareous clay marl soils shape the Pelosol. Fels combines clay marl and loess with rhyolite and quartz porphyry. In Reichskeller and in Rheingrafenberg, volcanic rock, Rigosol and loess-pararendzina occur. The described wine styles range from full-bodied, dense and creamy with moderate acidity to mineral, stony and smoky, with lively freshness, firm acidity and ageing potential.
