Location and Area
Ahrenberg is an officially recorded single vineyard site in the cadastral district Nack. It belongs to the Großlage of Adelberg and to the Bingen area within the wine-growing region Rheinhessen. In the 2024 vineyard site directory, the planted area is given as 30.5 hectares.
Soil
The soil consists of volcanic rock with brown earth (Braunerde), formed from dark volcanic lava of the Rotliegend. It is described as shallow-rooting, highly stony, sandy-clayey loam with low water-holding capacity available to plants, adequate aeration, good nutrient supply, good warming potential and limited rooting depth.
Wine Style and Name
The site profile links Ahrenberg with lively mineral character, comparatively elegant fruit notes of peach, apple and citrus, fine well-balanced acidity and a slender, multi-layered structure as well as ageing potential. Under the name Nacker Ahrenberg, wines made from Bacchus and Ortega are documented. According to the regional site profile, the name Ahrenberg goes back to a mis-spelling of the Middle High German adjective overen/oren, and is to be understood as an Oberberg (upper mountain/summit slope).
