Wirmsthal

Location and landscape

Wirmsthal is a district of the market town of Euerdorf in the Bavarian district of Bad Kissingen and is regarded as the northernmost wine-growing village of the Franconian wine-growing region. The village lies in a valley between Haarberg, Scheinberg and Siebenberg. On the municipality territory of Euerdorf, Scheinberg reaches a height of about 400 metres.

Viticulture and soils

Viticulture is carried out on soils from the Triassic; in the area of Scheinberg, formations of shell-bearing limestone are designated. At Scheinberg, new rows of vines were laid out in 1963. In Wirmsthal, Silvaner, Müller-Thurgau, Bacchus and Domina are grown.

History and wine designation

The name and the early settlement of Wirmsthal are linked to a Widom estate holding and the wine administration. In the Würzburg feudal records, the wine village is first mentioned in documents at about 1303. Scheinberg is entered as an approved wine-growing site designation for Euerdorf, cadastral district Wirmsthal, in the Franconia-Saale area. The designation is reserved for quality and predicate wines, whose grapes come from at least 85 per cent from the designated area.
