Wipfeld

Location and wine-growing area

Wipfeld is located in Franconia on the River Main, at the start of the Volkacher Mainschleife. Directly above the village is the vineyard Wipfelder Zehntgraf, with south-facing slopes.

Soils and cultivation

The vineyard area comprises deep Muschelkalk soils. Following the land consolidation (Flurbereinigung) from 1969 to 1970, the proportion of south-facing vineyard land extends over around 50 hectares; overall, around 85 hectares of vines are cultivated in the Zehntgraf by numerous full-time and part-time winegrowers.

Grape varieties and wine styles

White grape varieties include Silvaner, Müller-Thurgau, Bacchus, Grauburgunder, Traminer and Kerner. For red grape varieties, Domina, Spätburgunder, Regent and Dornfelder are documented. The Wipfelder Zehntgraf is listed, among other things, as a dry red wine made from Domina, and as a dry Grauburgunder in the Kabinett category. The wines carry designations from the protected Franconian wine-growing area and are classified as Qualitätswein or Kabinett.

History of winegrowing

In Wipfeld, winegrowing has been carried out on a larger scale since at the latest the ninth century; the first written mention that has survived dates from 1244. The name Wipfelder Zehntgraf has been used since 1971 for the marketing of wine from Wipfeld and goes back to the historical field name Zehntlein. A winery press house station near the Zehntlein vineyards was completed in 1973.
