Location on the Kessach and Jagst
Widdern lies at the confluence of the Kessach and the Jagst in the north of Baden-Württemberg. The municipal area extends along the Kessach and Jagst valleys.
Valleys and landscape
The Kessach valley cuts deep into the Middle Muschelkalk. The Jagst forms pronounced meanders with open Muschelkalk slopes. In the higher areas there are Lettenkeuper and loess-like soils; the valley floors consist of fine sandy loams. According to municipal records, the elevations within the municipal area range from 181 to 322 metres, with the highest point listed at around 351.4 metres.
Viticulture
Widdern forms part of the legally defined single vineyard Hofberg in the Kocher–Jagst–Tauber area of the Württemberg
Historical significance of viticulture
In 1736, wine in Widdern was an important source of food and economic resource. Nearly all vineyards were subject to the community winepress at the upper gate, which was held in the joint ownership of the local co-heirs.
