Location and municipal area
Wetterzeube is a municipality in the southern part of the Droyßiger-Zeitzer Forst administrative community in Saxony-Anhalt, on the border with Thuringia. The municipal area covers around 4,145 hectares and includes, besides Wetterzeube, among others Pötewitz, Haynsburg and Breitenbach.
Weiße Elster and local history
The town of Wetterzeube lies in the valley of the Weiße Elster. The historic village developed at the edge of the river floodplain and on the adjacent slopes. A limestone quarry originally separated two settlements, from which the present-day village later emerged. As early as a document dated 24 September 1209, a vineyard between Pötewitz and Wetterzeube is mentioned, which Bishop Engelhard of the Zeitzer church granted for cultivation of vines.
Vine growing in Saale-Unstrut
Wetterzeube belongs to the wine-growing region Saale-Unstrut. Along the Weiße Elster between Wetterzeube and Zeitz there are vineyards. The vineyard register as at 31 December 2024 lists the single vineyard Wetterzeuber Bischofsleite with 3.6438 hectares of planted vineyard area and the single vineyard Wetterzeuber Droyßiger Berge with 1.9913 hectares. Müller-Thurgau is documented for the Bischofsleite and was used in 2017 at a Wetterzeube wine event for the production of Federweißer.
