Untergruppenbach

Location and municipal area

Untergruppenbach is a municipality in the district of Heilbronn in Baden-Württemberg, to the south-east of Heilbronn. It is situated on a high plateau above the Neckar valley, while the foothills of the Löwenstein Hills extend into the municipal area.

Subdivisions and landscape

The municipality comprises Untergruppenbach, Unterheinriet, Donnbronn, Obergruppenbach, Oberheinriet and Vorhof, as well as the area of Burg and Gut Stettenfels. The landscape is hilly and is shaped by vineyards and extensive woodland areas. Burg Stettenfels stands on a steep hill to the east of the village.

Viticulture

Untergruppenbach is documented as a traditional wine-growing municipality. A wine-growing tradition in the present-day subdivision of Unterheinriet has already been evidenced for the period around 1100. The vineyards belong to the Großlage Kirchenweinberg in the area Württembergisch-Unterland of the wine-growing region Württemberg. The wine sites include the Schloßberg and the Sommerberg.

Viticultural landscape and geology

At the Schloßberg, two small dry-stone wall platform projects were planned; in addition, improved drainage in favour of wine-growing operations was examined. A wine education trail at the footpath to Burg Stettenfels conveys the local vineyard landscape and the work in the vineyard. At several natural exposures in the municipality, including a disused quarry near Untergruppenbach and an exposure near Unterheinriet, reed sandstone comes to the surface.
