Sulzthal

Location and landscape

Sulzthal is a market municipality in the Bavarian district of Bad Kissingen and lies in a side valley of the Franconian Saale in Franconia. The place is surrounded by Bugberg, Kappberg, Schlangenberg and Trieberg. The Schlangenberg, which gives the place its name, can be reached from the village via a footpath.

Viticultural conditions

The wine-growing landscape of the Saale valley is characterised by dry sites and significant fluctuations in temperature. Viticulture there focuses on small-scale, climate-favourable steep slopes. The slopes along the Franconian Saale are south-facing Muschelkalk slopes.

Wine-growing history and vineyard sites

For Sulzthal, winegrowing has been documented as far back as 1097. The local winegrowing tradition ended after the Second World War. Schlangenberg is listed as a vineyard site in Sulzthal within the protected designation of origin Franken, area Frankens Saalestück, Großlage Burg. As another independent Sulzthal vineyard site, St. Klausen is also recorded.
