Location
Seußlitz is part of the locality of Diesbar-Seußlitz in the municipality of Nünchritz in the district of Meißen in Saxony. Diesbar-Seußlitz lies on the River Elbe; terraced viticulture shapes the town at the beginning of the Saxon Wine Route.
Vineyard and soils
The Seußlitzer Heinrichsburg is a documented vineyard site within the Großlage Schlossweinberg. Soil profiles were recorded at elevations between 139 and 169 metres above sea level, including a profile on a slope of the Raupenberg. For the profiles examined, potential topographic radiation values of 1,883 to 2,040 kWh/m² were calculated.
The soils include brown earth from periglacial sand over meltwater deposits, eroded brown earth–parabrown earth from silt of loess origin, colluviosol from reworked sand, as well as rigosol with material from granodiorite, meltwater deposits and loess marl. The areas studied are used intensively as vineyards; their topsoil horizons are regularly worked.
Viticulture and history
Viticulture in Seußlitz and the Seußlitz Clarissine convent have been documented since 1272. In 1907, Reinhold Bahrmann planted the first vineyards in Diesbar-Seußlitz anew during the revival of Saxon viticulture, using grafted vines. In the local vineyards, among others, Goldriesling, Riesling, Müller-Thurgau, Traminer, Weißburgunder, Grauburgunder, Spätburgunder and Dornfelder are grown.
Heinrichsburg garden house
The Heinrichsburg garden house, which belongs to the Schlossensemble Seußlitz, was built to plans by George Bähr in the years 1725 to 1726. Since 2008 it has been leased to the Diesbar-Seußlitz winegrowing association, which uses it as a club house and exhibition venue with reference to wine.
