Seeheim-Jugenheim

Location on the Hessian Bergstraße

Seeheim-Jugenheim is located in Southern Hesse on the Hessian Bergstraße at the edge of the Odenwald. The municipality belongs to the Starkenburg area, whose northern wine-growing region begins south of Darmstadt with individual vineyards in Seeheim and Alsbach.

Viticulture and wine-growing sites

Wine-growing has been documented on the slopes of the Odenwald. The wine-growing site Mundklingen lies between Seeheim-Jugenheim and Darmstadt below the forest at about 200 metres above sea level. The Hessian Bergstraße is characterised by many small plots as well as by hillside viticulture, steep-slope sites and terrace wine-growing.

Climate

For the Hessian Bergstraße, the climate averages for the years 1991 to 2020 show an annual mean temperature of 11.6 °C, 692 millimetres of precipitation and 1,734 hours of sunshine. During the growing season, the averages are 16.5 °C, 429 millimetres of precipitation and 1,359 hours of sunshine. The Odenwald protects the area from rough north and east winds; the region has a long growing season.

Historical and wine-law framework

Seeheim-Jugenheim was formed on 1 January 1977 through the merger of the formerly independent municipalities of Seeheim and Jugenheim. The name Seeheim-Jugenheim replaced the separate place names from 1 January 1978. The Hessian Bergstraße has been an independent German wine-growing region since 1971 and belongs to the legally defined quality wine-growing regions. Its tradition of wine-growing has been documented as far back as the 8th century.
