Location on the Saale
Schönburg is a municipality in the Burgenlandkreis district in Saxony-Anhalt. It lies on the Saale, about five kilometres downstream from Naumburg, and belongs to the wine-growing region Saale-Unstrut.
Castle and sandstone cliffs
Schönburg was founded in the 12th century as the former bishop’s castle in connection with the bishops of Naumburg. It stands on a sandstone cliff that rises about 40 metres above the Saale.
Viticulture and climate
The Saale-Unstrut wine-growing area records around 500 millimetres of precipitation per year and around 1,600 hours of sunshine. The river valleys offer sheltered, warm sites, while winter and late frosts are among the important risks in viticulture. The 2024 vineyard register lists for the municipalities of Schönburg, Mertendorf, Wethau and Taugwitz a combined 1.2719 hectares of vineyard area without individually named vineyards.
Göttersitz in the surrounding area
The viticultural landscape associated with Goettersitz lies near Bad Kösen on steep slopes of the left bank of the Saale and within the protected landscape of Göttersitz. Documented wines from this site include dry Grauburgunder and dry Spätburgunder, which is matured in small wooden casks.
