Location and landscape
Sand am Main lies in the Main Valley on the northern edge of the Steigerwald Nature Park and extends as far as the River Main. The municipality rises from around 225 metres in the Main Valley to the Hermannsberg ridge at roughly 360 metres. The vineyards are located on the southern slopes of the Hermannsberg.
The geological subsoil consists of Middle Keuper. The varying layers of soil are assigned to the Lehrberg formation.
Vineyard sites
The vineyard sites Himmelsbühl and Kronberg belong to the Großlage Zeiler Kapellenberg. The Sander Kronberg comprises 11.37 hectares and has sandy Keuper soils. The Sander Himmelsbühl extends over 8.79 hectares and is characterised by loamy Keuper soils; its areas are oriented to the south, west and south-west.
Viticulture in Sand am Main
In Sand am Main, more than 20 hectares of vines are cultivated by 39 winegrowers. The wines are produced in the producers’ own cellars. Among other varieties, Müller-Thurgau, Silvaner, Bacchus, Kerner, Scheurebe, Weißburgunder and Riesling are grown, as well as Blauer Portugieser, Domina, Regent, Dornfelder, Müllerrebe, Merlot, Cabernet Dorsa, Cabernet Sauvignon and Blauer Spätburgunder.
The Kronberg is attributed a characteristic bouquet and a piquant taste, while the Himmelsbühl is described with a fruity bouquet. The documented types of vinification include wine production on the estate, Franken Sekt from individual producers, and the maturation of some red wines in barrique.
History and wine law
Sand am Main was mentioned for the first time in 1139 in a grant to the Michelsberg monastery in Bamberg. The municipality is located in the legally defined German quality winegrowing region Franken; the local designation for vineyard sites is linked to the Großlage Zeiler Kapellenberg.
