Location and landscape
Saarburg is located in the Trier-Saarburg district in Rhineland-Palatinate on the Saar. The town is situated at an elevation of 159 metres and covers an area of 20.36 square kilometres. In terms of viticulture, Saarburg belongs to the Mosel, to the Saar area there.
Steep slate slopes
The vineyards around Saarburg run along the steep slopes of the Saar valley. Slate forms the characteristic subsoil. The local wine-growing climate is shaped by special climatic conditions and the geology of the site.
Riesling and wine-growing
Along the Saar, wine has been grown for more than 2,000 years. Riesling is the most important grape variety on the steep slate slopes. The Saarburg Rieslings range from dry to noble-sweet and are associated with a fresh, mineral character. In the site Fuchs there are plots with large slate stones, old vines, including some vines with their own roots, as well as younger plantings.
Saarburg and its history
Saarburg was first mentioned in documents in 964 and lies above the Saar and the town. For Saarburg wines, spontaneous fermentation and bottling of dry Rieslings without filtration are also documented.
