Location and Landscape
Römerberg is a municipality in the Rhein-Pfalz district in Rhineland-Palatinate and belongs to Pfalz. It consists of the local districts of Berghausen, Heiligenstein and Mechtersheim. The municipality is located in the northern Upper Rhine lowlands, in the Vorderpfälzer lowlands and on the Schwegenheim loess plateau. A high bank, up to around 20 metres high, separates the Rhine lowlands from the lower terrace.
Climate and Soils
Römerberg has a continental basin climate with warm summers and mild winters. The average annual temperature is around 9 °C, and the average annual rainfall is approximately 500 to 550 millimetres. The location in the lee of the Palatinate Forest and the shape of the Rhine graben influence large-scale winds; winter inversion situations are also documented. In the area of the lower terrace, the planning documentation describes sandy silts over silt-clay mixtures.
Viticulture
Vine growing is carried out on the slopes of the high bank of the Rhine, which face east to south-east and receive the morning and midday sun. In the register of wine sites for the 2024 vintage, the sites Alter Berg, Narrenberg and Schlittberg are listed. They belong to the Pfalz winegrowing region, to the Südliche Weinstraße area and to the Großlage Trappenberg.
History of Viticulture
Römerberg was formed in 1969 through the merger of Berghausen, Heiligenstein and Mechtersheim. For Mechtersheim and Heiligenstein, wine-plot mentions dating back to the 16th century have been preserved. Historically, shared wine-pressing, large vaulted cellars and storage in large casks were part of wine production. In the vineyards, chamber cultivation was also used, in which the vines were trained on wooden structures.
