Alter Berg

Location and Classification

The Alte[r] Berg is an officially registered single vineyard in the wine-growing region Pfalz, in the district of Südliche Weinstraße and within the Großlage Trappenberg. The vineyard lies in the municipality of Römerberg and extends over the cadastral areas of Heiligenstein and Mechtersheim.

Area and Landscape

In the official register, 4.2 hectares are recorded in Heiligenstein and less than 1 hectare in Mechtersheim. The vineyards are located on the high bank of the Rhine above the former Rhine floodplain. The local high bank can be up to around 20 metres above the surrounding lowlands. The described sites at Alter Berg also include a south-facing slope.

Geological Framework

The high bank of Römerberg forms the boundary between the Rhine lowland and the lower terrace. The geological conditions in the municipality include Rhine terrace deposits and soils influenced by loess.

Cultivation and Wines

The Momm winery began in 2016 with the recultivation and replanting of plots at Alter Berg. Sauvignon Blanc, Sauvignac and Satin Noir are documented there. A lightly off-dry white wine cuvée made from Sauvignon Blanc and Sauvignac is described as fresh and fruity. The documented red wine from Satin Noir was pressed after 14 days of vat fermentation and then aged in barriques. The official vineyard code is 810914.
