History of the name

The name Narrenberg is historically documented for the vineyard on the Hochbank in Römerberg. A linguistic explanation derives it from the term for the nearby hill; a passed-down legend links it with Bernard of Clairvaux. Viticulture in Römerberg has been documented since at least the 16th century. A map from 1573 shows vineyards in the area of today’s Römerberg-Berghausen. In the Historical Museum of the Pfalz in Speyer, there is a decorative wine bottle label with the designation Narrenberger and the years 1752 and 1865.
