Remlingen

Location and landscape

Remlingen is a market town in the district of Würzburg in Lower Franconia, Bavaria, between the cultural landscape areas of Mainviereck and Maindreieck. The municipality is part of the wine-growing region Franken.

Relief, soils and climate

The Remlingen high plateau belongs to the Marktheidenfeld plates. The gently undulating to slightly hilly landscape lies at about 250 to 350 metres above sea level and is cut through by shallow valleys. It is characterised by Muschelkalk; transition areas show Löss over Muschelkalk or Keuper. The Löss soils include deep, brown and Parabrown earths. The climate is warm-continental, with warm summers and mild winters. In the rain shadow of the Spessart and Rhön, around 550 to 650 millimetres of precipitation fall every year.

Viticulture and history

Remlingen has a long-standing tradition of winegrowing, which is also reflected in the municipal coat of arms by the wine vine and grapes. A document dated 9 July 839 already mentions Remlingen as part of a forest that was transferred to the Fulda monastery. The oldest known court seal of Remlingen featuring a vine and hill dates from the early 18th century.

In the official Bavarian vineyard register, the Remlingen sites Krähenschnabel and Sonnenhain are entered in the Main Himmelreich area of the wine-growing region Franken. Both are classified as without Großlage. For the use of a registered vineyard site name as a geographical designation, at least 85 per cent of the grapes must come from the specified area.
