Location and landscape
Pünderich is a wine-growing community directly on the Moselle in the Moselle valley and is located in the Mittelmosel wine-growing region. The B53 runs inland behind the settlement. Between Pünderich and Trier, narrow bends of the Moselle and steep slopes—often facing south—shape the landscape; 40 percent of the vineyard area has a gradient of more than 30 percent.
Climate and soils
The climate in the Mittelmosel is influenced by the maritime climate, with warm summers, mild winters, south-westerly winds and annual rainfall of more than 600 millimetres. The vineyard soils consist of weathered Devonian slate, the porous rock of which can store the sun’s warmth. In the Pünderich Marienburg, softer, reddish Devonian slate with a high proportion of iron oxide occurs; the Pünderich Nonnengarten contains Devonian slate with embedded red sandstone.
Vineyard sites and wine style
The Pünderich district includes the vineyard sites Goldlay with 13.7 hectares, Marienburg with 45.4 hectares, Nonnengarten with 9.0 hectares and Rosenberg with 24.3 hectares of planted vineyard area. They are assigned to the Großlage Vom heißen Stein in the Bernkastel area. Riesling is one of the defining grape varieties of the slate steep slopes and ripens late. Mittelmosel wines combine fine fruit, fullness and complexity with comparatively low alcohol; Kabinett and Spätlese wines are also mentioned. Marienburg is associated with youthful fruit aromas, a soft texture and mocha and coffee notes developed later; Nonnengarten with spice, mineral character and depth.
Historical background
Pünderich is first documented for the year 1128, when Pope Honorius III transferred a farmstead in “Pundricho” to the Springiersbach abbey. Finds of pottery and coins point to Roman settlement from the 1st century BC to the 3rd and 4th centuries AD; in the Moselle region, the Romans carried out intensive viticulture. A tax list from 1652 recorded 56 wine presses in Pünderich, documenting a significant wine production.
