Nonnengarten

Location and classification

The Nonnengarten is a vineyard site in Pünderich in the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer wine-growing region of Germany. The site lies on the Pünderich side of the Moselle valley and downstream it borders the Marienburg. The name is connected with the Augustinian nuns’ monastery Marienburg on the ridge above the Pünderich vineyards.

Topography and soils

The Nonnengarten faces south-east and extends across slopes with a gradient of about 50 to 70 percent. The site reaches down to around 190 metres above sea level. The soil is described as red, clay-containing slate; locally, Devonian slate and scattered red sandstone are also mentioned. The proportion of sandstone points to deeper, more robust soils and the visibly reddish appearance of the site referred to as the “Garden of the Nuns”.

Climate and viticulture

Viticulture in the context of the Mosel is influenced by the maritime climate, with warm summers, mild winters, prevailing south-westerly winds and an annual rainfall of more than 600 millimetres. The area classified by the VDP covers 7.25 hectares. The Nonnengarten is classified as VDP.ERSTE LAGE®; Riesling is listed for the site.

Wine style

Wines from the Nonnengarten are characterised by extract, minerality and depth, as well as by the expression of the soil. Documented are Rieslings in the styles dry Kabinett, finely off-dry Hochgewächs and finely off-dry Spätlese.
