Location
Pflaumheim is a district of the market town of Großostheim in the Aschaffenburg district in Lower Franconia, Bavaria, and lies in the Bachgau. The region is assigned to the Franconian wine-growing area.
Landscape and soils
The place is located in the eastern part of the Lower Main plain, which is shaped by Main river lowlands and terrace sections. The Odenwald and the Main are key landscape features of the surrounding area. Geologically, the area belongs to the Buntsandstein-Odenwald unit. The soils include, among other things, floodplain deposits, sandy loams with loess components and sandy loess soils. Their sand content results in high water permeability as well as a comparatively low buffering and filtering capacity.
History and winegrowing
Pflaumheim is documented as the medieval Pflaumgau in the Codex Laureshamensis entry dated 9 October 794, and became a district of Großostheim in 1978. A plan from 1828 shows the Löwenstein communal ringel and wine farm in the cadastral districts of Großostheim and Pflaumheim.
The winegrowing site Weingarten is listed for Großostheim, district Pflaumheim, in the Churfranken area of the Franconian wine-growing region. The official Franconian vineyard register lists it as Großostheim-Pflaumheim.
Grape varieties
For wines from vineyard areas within the protected designation Franken, the Bavarian implementing ordinance specifies Silvaner, Riesling, Weißburgunder, Spätburgunder and Traminer as authorised grape varieties.
