Location and landscape
Patersberg lies on a long ridge above the Rhine valley near St. Goarshausen and St. Goar. The town is bounded by the Forstbach and Hasenbachtal valleys. The landscape belongs to the Middle Rhine and to the Rhenish Slate Mountains with folded slate and greywacke formations.
The Teufelstein vineyard site
Above the Rhine, in the elevated Loreley landscape, lies the single vineyard site Teufelstein, offering views of the Loreley. It belongs to the large vineyard site Loreleyfelsen in the Loreley area of the Mittelrhein Qualitätsweinbaugebiets.
Viticultural development
Teufelstein is documented as a former red wine vineyard site. In connection with BUGA 2029, in 2022 a possible reactivation for viticulture was discussed. Planned were red grape varieties that are adapted to newer climatic conditions and are more resistant to fungal diseases. Also discussed as plans were community vineyards and models for grapevine patronage or joint investment.
History
Patersberg is mentioned in a document from the year 1061, which regional historical research classifies as a forgery. The first reliably documented mention dates from around 1250.
