Location and climate
Oberfell lies on the right bank of the River Moselle in a broad bend of the river. The settlement extends from the bank to the foot of the Moselle slopes and into the valley of the Oberfeller Bach. The municipal area belongs to the mild, sunny Terrace Moselle, where the Moselle valley here is described as one of the warmest regions in Germany.
Vineyard sites and geology
The vineyards of Oberfell are on steep and very steep slopes. Rosenberg is a south-west-facing bank slope site with a gradient of about 60 per cent. The subsoil consists of moderately weathered sandy clay shale, which in the upper slope area becomes increasingly interspersed with quartzite.
Brauneberg and Rosenberg are registered as single sites in the Mosel winegrowing region, in the Burg Cochem area and as a Großlage Weinhex. In the official register of vineyard sites for 2024, Brauneberg has the number 440532, while Rosenberg has the number 440534. For Rosenberg, less than one hectare of planted vineyard area is recorded.
History and cultivation of Rosenberg
The Oberfeller Rosenberg was mentioned in 1093 in a grant from the Palatine Count Heinrich V to the Maria Laach Abbey. In vineyard surveys under Napoleonic administration in the 19th century, it was listed as a Grand Cru site.
In the replanting in April 2010, 1,100 Riesling vines of the Piesporter clone were planted. The restored vineyard received small-scale cross terraces and trellis frames for mechanical access. In addition, dry-stone walls were preserved and reconstructed, and herbicides were largely avoided. A wine from Oberfeller Rosenberg listed in 2024 was produced from Riesling and was classified as a Qualitätswein and Kabinett with the style descriptions feinherb and lieblich.
