Rosenberg

Location and terrain

The Rosenberg is a vineyard site in Oberfell on the Mosel. Oberfell belongs to the Burg Cochem winegrowing region within the Mosel growing area. The site is located on a south-west-facing slope running along the Mosel, with a gradient of around 60 percent.

Soil and vines

The soils consist of sandy loam and slate; in the upper part of the slope, quartzite occurs. In April 2010, as part of the Rosenberg project, around 1,100 Riesling vines of the Piesporter clone were planted.

Cultivation

A previously abandoned steep-slope vineyard area of around one hectare was restored in 2010 through small-scale, modern cross-terracing. Cross terraces and wire trellis frames allow the steep slope to be worked mechanically. Documented measures also include the maintenance and rebuilding of dry-stone walls, as well as largely foregoing herbicides.

Historical context

According to a community brochure, the Rosenberg was mentioned in 1093 in connection with a gift from the Count Palatine Heinrich V. to the Abbey of Maria Laach. During the vineyard survey in the 19th century under Napoleon Bonaparte, the site was classified as a grand cru site. Rosenberg in Oberfell is also recorded in the winegrowing geodata of the Rhineland-Palatinate Chamber of Agriculture.
