Location and geography
Niederotterbach is a municipality in the Südliche Weinstraße district in Rhineland-Palatinate and lies in the Palatinate. The village is situated on the Otterbach near the French border, between the Palatinate Forest and the Bienwald. The municipal area is 3.58 km²; the location is given as approximately 49.060937° north latitude and 8.045631° east longitude.
Viticulture
Agriculture and viticulture shape Niederotterbach. The single vineyard site Eselsbuckel belongs to the Südliche Weinstraße wine-growing region and the Großlage Guttenberg. Its soils are described as barren as well as rich in chalk and minerals. Riesling and Spätburgunder are successfully grown there.
Wines and production
Dried from the Eselsbuckel, dry and off-dry Rieslings, dry Weißer Burgunder, dry Grauer Burgunder, semi-dry Dornfelder, and a rosé made from Portugieser and Spätburgunder are documented. Riesling, Weißer Burgunder and Grauer Burgunder are produced and aged in stainless steel. The vineyards are cultivated according to ecological and partly biodynamic principles.
History
Niederotterbach is documented in a charter of King Otto III from the year 992, which records the transfer of the place to the Seltz monastery.
