The site carries the vineyard site number 810207 and belongs to the Großlage Guttenberg. The area directory for the 2024 harvest lists 56.2 hectares of planted vineyard area for Niederotterbach.
Name, Soils and Grape Varieties
A local producer describes the name Eselsbuckel as a reference to the characteristic hump-like shape, reminiscent of a donkey’s withers. The soils are described as poor in resources as well as rich in chalk and minerals. According to this producer, Riesling and Spätburgunder grow especially well there.
Wine Law and Cultivation
Eselsbuckel lies within the protected geographical area of the protected designation of origin Pfalz. The boundaries of the single vineyard were adjusted in 2023; in doing so, plots within the current area boundary were included in the site. Commercially documented wines from Eselsbuckel include Riesling Qualitätswein trocken. The organic winery Diehlmann cultivates its vines in Eselsbuckel according to ecological principles and, in part, biodynamic principles.
