Location
Mühlbach is a district of Karlstadt in Bavaria. The place lies on the left bank of the Main opposite Karlstadt and at the foot of Karlsburg. The nearby castle stands on a rocky outcrop above the left bank of the Main.
Viticulture on the Fronberg
The vineyard site Mühlbacher Fronberg is located in the left-bank Main slopes near Mühlbach. In the official Bavarian classification of vineyard sites, it belongs to the Großlage Roßtal in the Mittelmain area. Bands of shell-bearing limestone (Muschelkalk) and the corresponding soils determine the site. It is one of the dry areas around Karlstadt; the heat-storing shell-bearing limestone bands create a favourable microclimate for wine-growing.
Wines and history
For the Mühlbacher Fronberg, Silvaner, Müller-Thurgau, White Pinot (Weißer Burgunder), Regent and Domina are documented. A Silvaner Kabinett from the 2021 vintage was selected as Karlstadt’s city wine 2023 and described as a dry, mineral shell-bearing limestone Silvaner with fine fruit, balanced acidity and a herbaceous-spicy character. Further documented bottlings include dry Müller-Thurgau, dry White Pinot Kabinett, Regent quality wine and red wine cuvées.
Historically, viticulture was one of the most important lines of earning alongside mill operation, shipping, fishing and ferry operations. Mills have been documented in Mühlbach since 1358; the name of the village goes back to a karst spring stream that once drove several mills. In 1978, Mühlbach was incorporated into Karlstadt as part of the Bavarian territorial reform.
