Location and Landscape
Mosbach is located in the Elz valley on the southern edge of the Odenwald, where the town borders the landscape of the Bauland. The central urban area is flanked by the Hardberg and Henschelberg. Within the municipality, the Buntsandstein Odenwald and the Muschelkalk landscape of the Bauland meet.
Diedesheim and the Herzogsberg
The Diedesheim district lies to the northwest of Mosbach on the Neckar and has been part of the town since 1973. Below Schreckhof on the Schreckberg, above the Neckar valley, there is the vineyard connected with the Herzogsberg. The Baden single vineyard is legally assigned to the places of Binau and Diedesheim.
Viticulture
Mosbach was particularly well known for winegrowing in the 16th and 17th centuries. The documented vineyard at Stiftsberg covers 2,353 square metres and is cultivated by participants in structured employment programmes who have been long-term unemployed. Auxerrois and Regent grow there; from the grapes, a white wine made from Auxerrois and a red wine made from Regent are produced, which are marketed under the name Kreisler. Diedesheim’s tradition of winegrowing is also reflected in the coat of arms, which shows three blue grapes on a vine.
