Location and Topography
Monzingen is a wine-growing community in the middle Nahe valley. The village lies in a side valley drained by the Gaulsbach, on the Kirchberg, protected above the flood levels of the Nahe and the Gaulsbach. Forested outliers of the Soonwald border the landscape.
Climate and Soils
The wine-growing community is among the cooler sites on the Nahe. The area receives about 1,900 hours of sunshine annually and is influenced by rising warm air currents from the Nahe valley, while the Soonwald helps cool things down at night. The average annual rainfall is around 570 millimetres, with about 60 per cent falling during the growing season.
The vineyards of the Monzinger Niederberg are on south-facing slopes at elevations of about 160 to 240 metres, whose average gradient is more than 30 per cent. The predominant soils are weathered Waderner layers of conglomerate with slate, quartzite and gang quartz. The stony soils store only a limited amount of water and drain quickly after rainfall.
Vineyard Sites and Grape Varieties
The documented vineyard sites include Halenberg, Frühlingsplätzchen and Rosenberg. The Halenberg, east of the village, is exposed to the south to south-west, lies at 160 to 220 metres above sea level and has slopes of 20 to 70 per cent. The Frühlingsplätzchen also stretches exposed to the south to south-west at about 160 to 240 metres above sea level, with slope inclines of 10 to 70 per cent. Red slate, quartzite and red loam of the Rotliegend formation shape the soil there.
According to the local municipal administration, Riesling and Müller-Thurgau make up the largest share of the vineyard area.
Monzinger Niederberg
The protected designation of origin “Monzinger Niederberg” covers traditional south-facing vineyard areas between Monzingen and the B41 exit towards Nußbaum. It extends over 27.5543 hectares and is exclusively permitted for the grape variety Weißer Riesling. The grapes must reach at least the must weight of a Spätlese. The quality wines are dry and are described as having apple and citrus notes, with pronounced minerality.
Wine-growing in Monzingen has been documented since 778, when vineyards were gifted to the Abbey of Lorsch. In 1355 the village received town rights; between 1856 and 1860 the Nahe-Saar Railway was built.
