Mömlingen

Location and Natural Setting

Mömlingen lies in the Mömlingen valley near the Bavarian-Hessian border and is surrounded by the wooded heights of the Northern Odenwald. The municipality is part of the Geo-Nature Park Bergstraße-Odenwald. The Mömlingen hill country and the Niedernberger Forest reach around 300 metres in height; the landscape includes valley floors, lower slopes and steeper hillside locations.

Climate and Soils

The surrounding area forms a climatic transition from the cool, damp and forested Odenwald to the climatically favoured Untermaine lowland and the Reinheim hill country. For the period 1991 to 2020, approximately 800 millimetres of annual precipitation, an average annual temperature of 10 °C and around 1,350 to 1,449 hours of sunshine per year are given. Over the Lower Buntsandstein, loess and loess-influenced soils occur, while the valleys are characterised by loamy to silty floodplain deposits and by groundwater-influenced soils.

Viticulture and Geology

Mömlingen is located in the Sandstone Odenwald with extensive outcrops of the Lower Buntsandstein. The former Königswald quarry to the east of the town is recorded as a geological site (geotope) of the Lower Buntsandstein. On steeper slopes there are smaller vineyards alongside orchards, dry grassland (Magerrasen) and hedgerows. The single vineyard Orlis has been entered in the Unterfranken vineyards register since 1 April 2014 and, in the quality winegrowing area Franken, it belongs to the Mainviereck area.

History

The oldest written name associated with Mömlingen is Miminingen in a Fulda document, which historical research dates to about 780 to 817. In 2017, the municipality commemorated this with a 1,200-year celebration. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, sandstone extraction was an important line of work; Mömlingen sandstone was used in buildings in the nearby and wider surrounding area.
