Location and landscape
Merbitz is a district of Dresden in the locality of Mobschatz in the west of the Saxon state capital. The place lies on the left-bank Dresden plateau and is connected to the landscape of the Zschoner Grund. Saxony is listed as a region under Saxony.
Wine-growing history
Above the Zschoner Grund there is a historic wine-growing area. In Merbitz, an old farmers’ vineyard has been preserved, which is among the oldest vineyards in the Dresden area. Wine-growing has been documented at least since the 18th century; a boundary stone dated 1794 is considered evidence.
Location: farmers’ vineyards
The single vineyard farmers’ vineyards (Einzellage Bauernberge) belongs to the Großlage Elbhänge in the area of Meissen. As an associated district and/or as an associated municipality, Merbitz or Cossebaude are given. The site is characterised by planners’ sandstone.
Grape varieties and areas
The Cossebaude-Merbitz wine-growing association cultivates 2.2 hectares of vines in Merbitz and 1.5 hectares in Cossebaude. The listed grape varieties include Müller-Thurgau, Goldriesling, Pinot Blanc, Ruländer, Traminer, Riesling, Kerner and Spätburgunder. For the single vineyard Merbitzer Bauernberge, Pinot Gris is also listed.
