Location on the Lower Moselle
Löf is an Ortsgemeinde in the Mayen-Koblenz district in Rhineland-Palatinate. It is located on the Lower Moselle in the Löf Moselle bend and comprises the villages of Löf and Kattenes, which have formed a single municipality since 31 December 1975. Meadows, agriculturally used areas and the wooded valleys of Kehrbach and Alzbach shape the surrounding landscape. The Kanaul ridge between Löf and Kattenes reaches 242 metres and is the highest elevation within the municipality.
Viticulture and vineyard sites
Viticulture and agriculture shaped life in Löf well into the 20th century. The municipality belongs to the wine-growing region Mosel, area Burg Cochem, Großlage Weinhex. Officially registered sites include the Fahrberg in the cadastral district of Kattenes, Goldblume and Sonnenring in the cadastral district of Löf, as well as Steinchen in the cadastral district of Kattenes.
Soils and wine style
The vineyard sites on sunny Lower Moselle are characterised by crumbly slate soils that store warmth. The local wines are mostly white wines, with Riesling as the predominant grape variety. The Steinchen wine-growing area in Kattenes and Sonnenring in Löf are used for Riesling; the wines ripen in the winery of a local organic business.
Traces from history
The oldest surviving document in which Löf is mentioned dates from the year 893. In the municipal area there are traces of Roman settlements and archaeological finds. The municipality describes local winemaking as a tradition that goes back to Roman times.
