Steinchen

Location and classification

Steinchen is a registered single vineyard site in the municipality of Löf, in the cadastral district of Kattenes, in the wine-growing region of Mosel. The site belongs to the Großlage Weinhex and to the area of Burg Cochem. Its official wine-growing site number is 440512.

Terrain and soils

Katteneser Steinchen is documented as a steep, terraced vineyard site with a south-easterly aspect. The region forms part of sunny Untermosel; the crumbling slate soil can store heat.

Vines and cultivation

In the wine-growing sites directory of Rhineland-Palatinate, a total of 2.9 hectares planted with vines were listed for 2024. Riesling is documented as the grape variety for the site. For a Riesling from the 2018 vintage, grapes were used from vines of around 40 years old. A producer working there has been officially certified as organic since 2007 and describes work in the steep sites as particularly labour-intensive.

Wine styles and vinification

From Katteneser Steinchen, dry and gently off-dry Rieslings are documented, including a dry wine with less than 2 grams of residual sugar per litre and a gently off-dry Riesling with 21 grams per litre. A Riesling from the 2023 vintage is designated as a German Prädikatswein in the Kabinett category, gently off-dry. A documented 2018 vintage was fermented for a long time in stainless-steel tanks; the Riesling wines from the producer mentioned mature in their own cellar.
