Location and landscape
Kressbronn am Bodensee is a municipality in the Bodenseekreis district in Baden-Württemberg. It lies at the south-eastern end of Lake Constance, on the border with Bavaria. The municipal area extends from the Argen alluvial plain into higher young moraine land and comprises elevations between 389.34 metres above the lake shore and 520.81 metres in the north-east.
Vine cultivation on the hillside
The Berghalde is located at an altitude of about 420 metres. Lake Constance has a moderating effect on temperatures there. The approximately eight-hectare wine-growing site is planted on deposits from the Ice Age moraines, with rounded gravel and calcareous loam.
Grape varieties and wine style
Kressbronn am Bodensee is the only wine-growing municipality on Lake Constance that is assigned to the wine-growing region Württemberg, more precisely the Württemberg section of Lake Constance. The Berghalde has documented Müller-Thurgau, Kerner and Spätburgunder. The Kressbronn range also includes Weißburgunder and Grauburgunder. Bottled wines include, among others, dry and semi-dry Müller-Thurgau as well as Spätburgunder.
History and management
The municipality was formed in 1934 through the merger of the former municipalities Hemigkofen and Nonnenbach. In the 19th century, some earlier vineyards were converted to fruit growing, hop cultivation or livestock keeping. For wine cultivation in Kressbronn, handwork in the vineyard without herbicide strips and insecticides, as well as modern cellar technology, are also documented.
