Kraichtal

Location and landscape

Kraichtal is located in the north-eastern part of the Karlsruhe district in Baden-Württemberg. The town comprises nine districts; Münzesheim has been the administrative centre since the town was founded in 1971. The landscape includes gentle hills, forests, meadows, orchards with standard fruit trees, hollow ways, and vineyards.

Viticulture in the Kraichgau

Kraichtal belongs to the Kraichgau wine-growing region within the Baden wine-growing quality region Baden. The Kraichgau is considered sunny and is protected by the Odenwald and the northern Black Forest. The vineyards are usually located between 120 and 330 metres above sea level; for the area, around 2,000 hours of sunshine and 850 millimetres of annual precipitation are given.

Grape varieties and wine-growing sites

In the wine-growing places of Kraichtal, among others, Müller-Thurgau, Riesling, Ruländer, Silvaner, Auxerrois and Burgundy varieties are documented. The vineyards of the districts belong to the Baden large vineyard sites Mannaberg and Stiftsberg. The Kraichtaler Kirchberg is linked with Grauburgunder, Weißburgunder, Auxerrois, Schwarzriesling and other varieties. The Lerchenberg in Bahnbrücken was, from 1970 onwards, planted mainly with Müller-Thurgau and Weißriesling.

Historical viticulture

A dispute about wine tithe in Landshausen was settled in 1454. This documents the wine-growing connection of today’s Kraichtal district already in the late Middle Ages.
