Location on the Saar and Moselle
Konz is in the west of Rhineland-Palatinate at the confluence of the Saar and the Moselle, about eight kilometres from Trier. The town belongs to the Moselle region.
Landscape and climate
The wine-growing landscape includes steep slopes along the Saar, the Moselle valley and the Konzer Tälchen. It was formed from an earlier branch of the Moselle and is shaped by the local districts of Niedermennig, Obermennig and Krettnach. The sheltered valley climate offers favourable conditions for warmth and rainfall on steep slopes and in the valleys.
Soils and viticulture
On the Saar slopes, slate predominates, while the gentler slopes of the Upper Moselle are linked to shell limestone soils. Riesling characterises the slate sites along the Saar. On shell limestone, Elbling, Burgundian varieties and red grape varieties also grow; Elbling is used for fresh, dry and sparkling wines. The vineyard sites around Konz, in the Moselle growing area, belong to the Saar area and to the Großlage Scharzberg. Steep and terraced vineyards with more than 30 degrees of incline are often read by hand in the Moselle region.
History
Konz is already attested from Roman times under the name Contionacum. For the wine region on the Moselle, Saar and Ruwer, evidence of large-scale viticulture in Roman times has been handed down. In 1959, Konz officially received town status.
