Location
Kalkofen is a municipality in the Donnersberg district in Rhineland-Palatinate. The place lies on the northern edge of the North Palatinate Uplands and borders the region Nahe.
History and viticulture
Kalkofen was first documented in a written record in 1365. The local chronicle documents a more than 500-year history of viticulture. Former vineyards were located, among other places, above the Ohlbach valley.
Graukatz vineyard site
Graukatz is listed as a single vineyard site in the Nahe wine-growing region within the municipality of Kalkofen. Since the end of the “Paradiesgarten” designation in 1988, Graukatz has been the remaining listed vineyard-site designation for the town. A regional report from 2025 describes Graukatz as the only still-existing named vineyard site in Kalkofen.
