Location and wine landscape
Hüttenheim is a wine-growing village in the southern Steigerwald of the Franconian wine region and belongs to the wine landscape known as Weinparadies Franken. The vineyards are located in a relatively dry, warm area with around 550 to 650 millimetres of average annual rainfall and average temperatures of 8 to 9 °C. Hüttenheim lies within the legally defined quality wine-growing area Franken.
The Hüttenheimer Tannenberg
The vineyard sites around the Tannenberg include both high plateaus and hillside areas. The Hüttenheimer Tannenberg has around 75 hectares of vine area. Its nutrient-rich, mineral-containing soils are assigned to the gypsum Keuper. Winegrowing in Hüttenheim has been documented since 1199.
Grape varieties and wine profile
Müller-Thurgau and Silvaner are the most important grape varieties at the Hüttenheimer Tannenberg. In addition, Riesling, Bacchus, Scheurebe, Johanniter, Burgunder varieties, Domina, Dornfelder and Spätburgunder are also grown, among others. The wines from the gypsum Keuper soils of the southern Steigerwald are described as powerful, extract-rich and mineral.
History and winegrowing
Historically, wine was stored in cellars beneath the church buildings of the fortified church complex in Hüttenheim. In 1818, a Jewish cemetery was created at the Tannenberg, documenting the historical presence of a Jewish community in the vineyard landscape. At least one winegrowing business at the Hüttenheimer Tannenberg works according to the standards of organic farming and cultivates steep slopes.
