Location and affiliation
Horrweiler is an Ortsgemeinde in the district of Mainz-Bingen in Rhineland-Palatinate and belongs to the Verbandsgemeinde of Sprendlingen-Gensingen. The municipality is located at the upper end of a narrow, water-rich valley on the west edge of the Rheinhessen hills, and is thus in the wine-growing region Rheinhessen.
History and viticulture
Horrweiler was first mentioned in 1233 in a written record under the name Holwilre. Historical finds provide evidence of Roman estates as well as traces of settlement from the Hallstatt period in the surrounding area. A Roman grape-knife found in the region also indicates winegrowing in Roman times.
Vineyard sites and soils
The sites Gewürzgärtchen and Goldberg are classified as marl and Pelosol soils, respectively. The deep, calcareous, clay-containing soils were formed from calcareous deposits of the Tertiary sea. They are rich in nutrients and strongly calcareous, but warm only moderately and are difficult for roots to penetrate. Gewürzgärtchen is named after the former use of the area as a spice garden.
Wine profile and classification
The wines of Gewürzgärtchen are described as dense, full-bodied and fruity, with a creamy impression and moderate acidity. The Goldberg stands for a full-bodied, dense and rich profile with moderate acidity, a creamy texture and ripe aromas of mango, apricot and honeydew melon. Both vineyard sites legally belong to the Rheinhessen wine-growing area, the Bingen section, and to the Großlage St. Rochuskapelle. In the 2024 register of vineyard sites, in the Horrweiler cadastral area 133.6 hectares in Gewürzgärtchen and 110.7 hectares in Goldberg were planted with vines.
