Hopfgarten

Location and townscape

Hopfgarten is a district of the municipality of Grammetal in the Weimarer Land district in Thuringia and belongs to the Saale-Unstrut region. The village lies at the foot of the Wartberg and covers 911 hectares. As a planned village, it is bounded by the Weimarbach, the Utzberger Bach and the Gramme; to the north lie the Ettersberg woods, while the B7 between Weimar and Erfurt partly forms the southern boundary.

Historic viticulture

In Hopfgarten, winegrowing was carried out in the past. The wine from Hopfgarten was once known and sought-after. According to the municipality, historic viticulture declined as a result of climatic deterioration and the loss of vines during harsh winters.

Viticulture today

Since 2000, former vineyard sites in Hopfgarten have been cultivated again as part of a regional revival of viticulture. The documented vineyard is managed traditionally and according to ecological principles. Sown vine rows and biodiversity niches support beneficial insects. Plantings include Regent, Phönix and Ehrenfelser; from these, quality wines are produced, including Phönix-Ehrenfelser, Regent and Regent Rosé.

In the Saale-Unstrut vineyard directory (as of 31 December 2024), Hopfgarten is listed as “without separate vineyard sites” and is therefore not assigned to any designated single vineyard site.
