Location in the Hegau
Hilzingen is a municipality in the Hegau landscape in Baden-Württemberg. In the Hilzingen area lies the vineyard Elisabethenberg at Hohentwiel.
Elisabethenberg at Hohentwiel
The Elisabethenberg extends along the south-western to south-south-western slopes of Hohentwiel at an altitude of around 560 metres. The steep plots, oriented to the south to south-west, shape the local vineyard climate. The soils consist of volcanic weathering material, which in the lower parts of the slope is connected with glacial end moraine; the geological environment includes phonolite.
Viticulture and single-vineyard site
Viticulture at the Elisabethenberg has been documented since 1928. Planting in the south-western area began in 1934 with initially 3.85 hectares. The winery has been certified as organic since the 2013 vintage and, among other things, focuses on reducing yields. Grown here include Müller-Thurgau, Spätburgunder, Weißburgunder, Grauburgunder, Riesling, Sauvignon blanc, Chardonnay, Regent, Bacchus, Muskateller and Auxerrois.
Elisabethenberg is a single-vineyard site in the Lake Constance area of the Badische winegrowing region and belongs to the Großlage Hohentwiel. Dry white wines and dry Spätburgunder are documented; selected wines are matured in wood and filled unfiltered.
