Location and Classification
Herbolzheim (Osing) is a district of Markt Nordheim in the district of Neustadt an der Aisch-Bad Windsheim in Bavaria. The locality lies in the southern Steigerwald region and belongs to Franconia.
Freimarkung Osing
Herbolzheim is located on the edge area of the Hochplateau of the Freimarkung Osing, which rises to around 329 metres. Together with Humprechtsau, Krautostheim and Rüdisbronn, it is one of the four villages associated with the Freimarkung. The plateau is part of the Franconian Keuper strata landscape and is characterised by alternating clayey Keuper layers with harder marl and sandstone deposits.
The Freimarkung Osing is a historically collectively used agricultural area. Its arable plots are distributed by lot among the eligible farmers every ten years and farmed together.
Viticulture and Vine-growing Areas
Today, there is no active winegrowing in Herbolzheim. Historically, however, wine was grown there in the 19th century and even earlier; for the year 1347, a wine-related levy from Herbolzheim in connection with a transfer under feudal law is also documented.
In the official Bavarian directory of vine-growing areas, Herbolzheim–Freimarkung Osing is listed under the single site Rosenberg within the larger area Burgberg in the region of Mittelfränkische Bocksbeutelstraße.
