Location and landscape
Gundelfingen lies directly north of Freiburg im Breisgau in Baden-Württemberg. The municipality includes the district of Wildtal, the Freiburger Bucht, Wildtal and the Roßkopf, which reaches an elevation of 737 metres. The landscape extends from the Freiburger Bucht into the foothill zone of the Black Forest.
Soils and viticulture
In the area of the Freiburger Bucht, older gravels, loess and loess loam shape the subsoil. The higher-lying part is characterised by Schapbach gneiss and mixed gneiss. Viticulture takes place mainly on the steeper foothill slopes, while flatter areas are used more for arable farming, fruit growing and vegetable cultivation.
The Sonnenberg is registered as a single-vineyard site in the Breisgau wine-growing area of the protected German winegrowing region Baden. The south-facing site lies between Gundelfingen and the village centre of Wildtal. A local wine-growing business cultivates 3.5 hectares of vineyard there.
Grape varieties and wine styles
On the Gundelfingen Sonnenberg, Blauer Spätburgunder, Weißer Burgunder, Grauer Burgunder, Müller-Thurgau, Riesling and Sauvignon blanc are grown. From Blauer Spätburgunder, red wine, Weißherbst, Pinot Rosé and Pinot Noir blanc de noirs are produced. Weißer Burgunder Sekt and Pinot Rosé Sekt are made using traditional bottle fermentation.
Historical development
Gundelfingen was first mentioned in the year 1008, came under the Margraviate of Baden in 1507 and was united politically with Wildtal in 1972.
