Großwallstadt

Location and landscape

Großwallstadt is a municipality in the Miltenberg district in Lower Franconia. It lies directly on the River Main between the mountain ridges of Spessart and Odenwald. The vineyards are located on the southern slopes of the Main valley.

Viticulture and terroir

Großwallstadt is a traditional wine-growing municipality in Franconia. The wine-growing area is characterised by a mild climate as well as hot, strongly sun-exposed vineyard sites. Keuper sandstone provides a characteristic geological foundation for the vineyards. At the site of Lützeltal, weathered Keuper sandstone lies beneath a layer of loess loam.

Lützeltalerberg

The officially listed vineyard Lützeltalerberg is located in Großwallstadt and forms part of the protected wine-growing region Franken, in the Churfranken area. The site is entered without a designation of large areas. Grapes cultivated there include, among others, Spätburgunder, Chardonnay, Frühburgunder, Weißburgunder and Müller-Thurgau. The wine site produces both red and white wines.

Tradition and cultivation

The Großwallstadt wine-growing association was founded in 1922. A local business cultivates vineyards, including the Lützeltalerberg, sustainably and responsibly; another winemaker from Großwallstadt has been working according to ecologically certified principles since 2013. At one operation, the wines mature for about a year in stainless-steel tanks and barriques and are bottled largely unfiltered.
