Location and landscape
Göcklingen is a wine-growing village in the Pfalz on the Southern Wine Route. The Kaiserbach flows through the settlement from west to east. Vineyards surround the village on the slopes; the Setzerberg area rises to about 230 metres above sea level.
Climate and geology
Göcklingen is distinguished by many hours of sunshine and a Mediterranean climate. The village is located near the geological transition between the Pfälzerwald and the Upper Rhine Plain. Clay, loam, loess and other layers of rock there influence the discharge of groundwater and the formation of springs. A former clay pit was created in the 1970s and 1980s through open-cast clay extraction.
Viticulture
As part of structural change in the 20th century, local agriculture shifted more from mixed farming towards viticulture. The farming and winegrowing community of Göcklingen was founded in 1951. In the official directory of wine-growing sites for 2024, the Kaiserberg is listed as a single site within the Großlage Herrlich. The Herrenpfad is a single site spanning across municipalities within the Großlage Kloster Liebfrauenberg; on Göcklingen’s municipal territory, 48.1 hectares are recorded for it.
History and cultural landscape
Göcklingen is documented for the first time in 1254 under the name Geckelingin in donation charters; the spelling used today first appears in 1492. The historic vineyards on the Setzerberg were adapted to the terrain and secured by retaining walls or field terraces, some of which are more than two metres high. After the Second World War, land consolidation, straighter plots, drainage and farm tracks led to a changed landscape structure.
