Location and landscape
Gerolzhofen is a town in the administrative district of Lower Franconia (Unterfranken) in Bavaria, in the Schweinfurt district. It lies on a high plateau between the Steigerwald and the Main Valley.
Wine landscape
The town belongs to the Wine Culture Landscape of WeinSteiger, which includes the northern Steigerwald and its west-facing slopes exposed to the sun. The surrounding area includes vineyards, winegrowing educational trails and historically mixed-planted plot areas. The vineyard sites in the Steigerwald area around Gerolzhofen are connected with Keuper rock layers.
Vineyard sites
The Gerolzhöfer Arlesgarten lies near the Gertraudiskapelle. In the Bavarian directory of vineyard sites, Gerolzhofen-Arlesgarten is assigned to the area Weinpanorama Steigerwald and to the Großlage Zabelstein. Gerolzhofen-Köhler also belongs to this area and this Großlage; in addition, certain Gerolzhofen plots of the Köhler site are listed outside the Großlage classification.
Historical context
Gerolzhofen was first mentioned between 750 and 779; it is documented as a market in 1056 and as a town in 1350. At a town wine festival, among other things, Silvaner and Bacchus as well as red wine were served; at the station in the Gerolzhöfer Arlesgarten, Franconian wine is poured.
