Location and landscape
Freudental is a municipality in the north-west of the district of Ludwigsburg in Baden-Württemberg. It lies at the foot of the Stromberg in the upper Steinbach valley and, geographically, belongs both to the Stromberg-Heuchelberg natural area in the west and to the Neckar basin in the east. Wooded Keuper escarpment hills of the southern Stromberg enclose the loess-influenced basin. Elevation ranges from 269.55 to 401.45 metres above sea level.
Viticulture
In Freudental there are part-time agricultural businesses whose focus lies in viticulture. The small area of the municipality limits the importance of agriculture overall. The vineyard designation Kirchberg extends over the municipal districts of Sachsenheim, Bönnigheim, Freudental and Kirchheim am Neckar. Under wine law, Kirchberg is listed as a single-vineyard (Einzellage) within the Großlage Stromberg.
History
Freudental was first mentioned in documents in 1304 under the name “Froedental”. A local seal dating from 1689 showed a vine and documents viticulture as part of the local history.
