Location and landscape
Fischingen is a municipality in the district of Lörrach in Baden-Württemberg. It lies in the southern Markgräflerland and in the Vorderes Kandertal between the Rhine valley and the Black Forest. The municipal centre is situated at about 279 metres above sea level on the western slope of the Läufelberg, surrounded by vineyards and meadows.
Geology and climate
Oligocene Alsatian molasse is exposed at the Läufelberg, which consists mainly of finely bedded limestones, mica-rich molasse sands and cemented carbonate layers. In the Markgräfler hill country, loess, loess loam and terrace gravel can also be found. The area belongs to a mild and sunny wine-growing region shaped by the Upper Rhine valley and the protection of the Black Forest.
Viticulture
Viticulture is the most important agricultural activity in Fischingen. The vineyard areas are assigned to the single-vineyard site Weingarten and to the large vineyard site Vogtei Rötteln; Fischingen thus lies in the Badish wine-growing region of the EU wine-growing zone B. Documented varieties include, among others, Gutedel, Spätburgunder, Weißburgunder, Grauburgunder, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Regent. Viticulture has been documented in Fischingen as far back as 1615.
History
Fischingen was first mentioned in documents in the year 772. Finds of arrowheads and stone axes indicate an even earlier settlement within the municipal area.
