Location and landscape
Eußenheim is a municipality in the valleys of the Wern and Aschbach in the Main-Spessart district in Lower Franconia, Bavaria, between Karlstadt and Hammelburg. The surrounding wine-growing landscape comprises Muschelkalk slopes and is part of Franconia.
Winegrowing on the Eußenheimer First
The Eußenheimer First is a recognised Franconian wine site. It has a south to south-easterly orientation and a slope of around 25 to 45 percent. The subsoil consists of Lower Muschelkalk, partly with a substantial layer of loess clay. The soils are considered to retain water and to be rich in minerals.
Winegrowing tradition and grape varieties
Up to around the beginning of the 20th century, wine was grown on the municipality’s southern slopes. After the vineyards were abandoned as a result of heavy pest infestation, the First and Redhard were replanted in 1971 as part of land consolidation on 22 hectares. Among others, Kerner, Blue Frühburgunder, Spätburgunder, Bacchus, Müller-Thurgau and Silvaner have been planted on the First. Documented there are a semi-dry Kerner Kabinett and a dry Spätburgunder single-vineyard wine.
